My name is Karen McGaffick.  I graduated from Bowling Green State
University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and
Special Education.  I taught for one year in Columbus, Ohio before
coming to RHCS.  I taught 3rd grade for six years before stepping
aside to raise my two daughters.  I returned part time in 2007 as the
special education coordinator which enabled RHCS to offer the State
Autism Scholarship.  I am blessed to have the opportunity to return
full time and be a part of the ministry at RHCS.

One of my greatest rewards as a teacher is seeing some of my
former students now as young adults.  They are husbands and wives,
teachers, police officers, nurses and worship leaders.  They are
serving God in their own unique ways.  I thank God for the opportunity
to have been a part of their development.

Second grade is a time of great changes.  Both their gross motor and
fine motor skills are developing.  They love to run and play at recess.
Their ability to print, color and write in cursive improves every day.
They also lose their baby teeth, so we have many interesting smiles.

Emotionally they are learning to wait their turn, handle disappointment
and work as a team in small groups.  This brings new friendships but
also changes some interpersonal relationships.  They learn to let a
friend have other friends and make new ones themselves.

Our academic goals are to increase reading comprehension, learn our
addition and subtractions facts, write a complete sentence and know
why it is complete or incomplete and write in cursive.  Accelerated
Reader is very important in increasing our reading speed as well as
our comprehension.  Second graders are full of energy!

Accelerated Reader:  Students must select a book within their
reading level, as set by the Star test.  If a topic is assigned, such as
animals, they need to read in that area.  Books without a test can not
be counted.  Parents should help their student select an appropriate
book.  To see f the book has a test you should go to
arbookfinder.com.
