Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!  My name is Tandy
Hicks and I am the firth and sixth grade Language Arts and History
teacher.  I have been teaching for approximately 17 years, and more
then 10 of them have been at RHCS.  I have completed a Masters of
Education Program in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana
Wesleyan University and believe that education is the number one
key to success.  I am also a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and have been preaching for more then 10 years.  My motto is
Education + Salvation = a Perfect Combination.

As a parent of four school age children I start each year with mixed
emotions.  Lots of thoughts flow through my mind.  I wonder if my
children will do well this year.  Will the teacher treat my child fairly?
Will I have to sit up late at night to do homework?  Do I even know
this new math?  I am sure you can relate.  Therefore, I try to treat
each one of my students in the same manner that I treat my children.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 says "…and a threefold cord is not easily broken."
I also believe in developing a three stranded cord with the parents of
my students with the Holy Spirit being the third strand.
Communication and a "working together" approach helps my children
become more successful in the classroom and in life.

Students in fifth and sixth grade begin to solidify the autonomy they
have been developing throughout elementary school.  This is the time
when they begin to strengthen their own identity.  Each child
struggles with the acceptance of their peers and being true to
themselves.  I love to challenge their belief system.  I want them to
know who God is and for them to have their own personal relationship
with Jesus Christ.  My goal is that they will be able to defend their
Christian beliefs to any one who challenges them and not be afraid of
what they believe.  No longer can children stand against the evils of
society and say, "because the Bible says so."  I want them to be
able to know for themselves that the Word is true.

This is also the time when the students begin to reach puberty.  It is
necessary that they have a keen sense of their bodies and its
development.  My goal is to teach them that they are fearfully and
wonderfully made, and to help them understand the changes going on
in their bodies and in their emotions.  Fifth graders are engaged in
numerous school activities such as the ACSI Spelling Bee, Speech
Meet, Math Olympics, intramural sports as well as the Elementary
National Honor Society.
